Name: Nyxanem (Nicks-AN-em)

Element: Quicksilver (mercury)

Element Description: Mercury is a highly toxic substance that causes impaired vision and speech. It will also leave nasty welts on the skin. Nyxanem uses it in the form of a whip, although it has many negative effects on her own psyche. Because her weapon is a felt-covered mercury whip, she has the advantage in fighting as long as she can keep her enemy at bay. When it comes to hand-to-hand combat, she struggles, and will use the handle of her whip to attack.
Because she uses her element as her weapon, she has built uplarge reserves of energy that allow her to control it better. In dire situations, she can create varying amounts of the toxic semi-liquid, at the cost of her own energy. It is in no way unlimited, because once she tires out, so does her element. To help this from happening, she carries a play-dough sized canister around, filled with mercury. The mercury kept there is used to dissolve projectiles, and/or serve as a very raw form of her whip. She knows her limits and very rarely goes overboard, prefering finesse to brute force.
If Nyxanem were to put raw mercury on a normal persons skin, it would look lke it was evaporting, when in fact it would be absorbing straight into the bloodstream, leaving a burn on the spot of entrance. This doesn't happen to Nyx herself, because she already has mercury poisoning, and her control over it prevents it from leaking under her skin. When she has pushed herself beyond her limits however, the mercury will start to cover her body, and sap her energy as it burns her flesh.

A little lesson on Mercury: The Indian word for alchemy is Rasavātam which means "the way of mercury".
Alchemists thought of mercury as the First Matter from which all metals were formed. They believed that different metals could be produced by varying the quality and quantity of sulfur contained within the mercury. The purest of these was gold, and mercury was called for in attempts at the transmutation of base (or impure) metals into gold as was the goal of many alchemists.
Hg is the modern chemical symbol for mercury. It comes from hydrargyrum, a Latinized form of the Greek word Ύδραργυρος (hydrargyros), which is a compound word meaning "water" and "silver" — since it is liquid, like water, and yet has a silvery metallic sheen. The element was named after the Roman god Mercury, known for speed and mobility. It is associated with the planet Mercury; the astrological symbol for the planet is also one of the alchemical symbols for the metal. Mercury is the only metal for which the alchemical planetary name became the common name.

Backstory: Seventeen year old Amyenn found that living in the Shadow Realm of the MirrorMask world suited her just fine. She made masks and hats for a while, her deft fingers becoming more skilled by the day. The mercury used in curing the felt had many possible dangers, including maddness, but she continued working, liking her job too much to find a safer one. The Princess had run away, leaving the Queen of Darkness to boil in her anger and hate. Day by day, more shadows were created, floods of unending darkness came over the land, devouring everything light, and everything dark. Monsters began to form in the shadows, weak at first, but growing stronger as the Queen's hate grew. Finally, the monsters, known as Heartless, became synonamous with the darkness, and the Evil Queen controlled them all together. When the Queen of Darkness sent her Shadows to find her lost Princess, scouring the lands, ignoring all boundries of light and dark, Amyenn didn't stand a chance. If the Shadows could destroy entire cities and make cluttered areas into empty voids, then there was no way a young girl could stop them. She fought valiently, but was easily overcome. The only thing that kept her from dying completely was the pocket of dementia in her mind that she retreated to at the moment of death.

Waking was not a pleasant experience. Someone was prodding her arm relentlessly. When she finally twitched awake, she was staring into the eyes of a buxom blonde. Her serious expression jolted the girl to wakefulness. "My name is Xalna." She held out a hand. With an quirky smile, the newly made Nobody excepted the offer. "My name... is Nyxanem."

Personality: Nyx is definity an odd one. She can often be found talking to herself in a corner, or grinning like a mad man at a plant. She finds that if she finds someone to have a long conversation with, her sudden mood changes startle them into leaving abruptly. She can go from being sarcastic and cruel to bubbly and perky, but there has to be a trigger. Without a catalyst, Nyx will remain stotic and calm, with a blank look on her face. Though she doesn't try to be mean, she is tactless and blunt, hardly ever thinking about the consequences of what she says or does.
